J.Lo Named as the World’s No1. Most Powerful Celebrity

Forbes Magazine Celebrity 100

Image
Forbes magazine have named the American singer and actress, Jennifer Lopez, as the world’s most powerful celebrity. The American Idol judge claimed the top spot in the Celebrity 100 list replacing Lady Gaga who slipped to fifth place this year. Her success can, in some degree, be attributed to the way she has developed the J.Lo brand through a diversified range of business products. In particular her perfume and fashion line have made a major contribution of raising her profile in the past twelve months.

Broad Portfolio of Work

There was a time when success in just one discipline was enough to top the list and celebrities could find themselves in the number one spot just through acting, or singing success. This is no longer the case and a Forbes top slot can now only be obtained through a broad portfolio of work if the J.Lo example is anything to go by. She has nailed the top spot by earning a staggering $52 million in the course of the last 12 months and, unless you are a Hollywood A-lister, with a string of blockbusters under your belt, or a sporting personality with a trophy cabinet full of top honors, and the endorsements to back it up, this kind of money can only be amassed through a range of avenues. This is exactly what J.Lo has done.

Twists and Turns in the Tale

The J.Lo tale is certainly one which has had a fair few twists and turns. Indeed her life story at this point must have many a Hollywood scriptwriter reaching for their textbooks in order to pen what is the truly remarkable story of ‘Jenny From the Bronx.’ Just a few years ago it looked like she was washed up. Her musical popularity was on the wane, album sales were down. After a blistering start in Hollywood she suffered some box office flops and the plum roles just dried up. Even her clothes lines were struggling. She was very publicly battling on all fronts and was losing quite badly. There was some conjecture as to how she would cope with the kind of losses that her brand was incurring and speculation was rife that she was a big star in danger of falling completely from the skies.

Turning Point in 2010

The turning point for J.Lo came in 2010 when she managed to secure a role on the talent contest American Idol. The role projected her back into the public eye and reinvigorated her brand across the US. Added to the new job she had some upheaval in her personal life which helped elevate to her status. She broke up with her husband, Marc Anthony, and as a single mother was identified with by many and got oodles of media attention, which did no harm in pushing the brand even further. With the return to fame came the endorsements and she secured deals in the cosmetics world with some big name brands like L’Oreal and Gillette.

Clothing Line With Kohls

As her portfolio regained its stature she added a clothing line at the Kohl’s which hit the market running and then added her own brand fragrance which, on the back of an aggressive marketing campaign, established a strong foothold and turned in some decent revenue figures. She also got back into the studio and arranged collaborations with some ‘on-point’ artists like Pitbull and Lil Wayne which have helped her back to the top of the charts with hit after hit. Re-finding her fame has also allowed her to pump up her American Idol salary, her contract for the second series was reputedly for some $20 million.

Management of Social Media

It is fair to say that as part of her resurgence J.Lo has left nothing to chance. She has not relied on any one part of her undoubted talents to carry her along, but instead focussed on ensuring that every effort has been made to ensure she remains at the top of the pile. Her use of social media exemplifies this. She has 12 million fans on Facebook and 6.6 million followers on Twitter. She maintains high profile and regular contact through her social media with the fans and this has helped Lopez to re-establish her dominance and bring in the massive earnings that have put her at the top of the list for the first time.

Iggy Azalea Backtracks on Tweeting Assets

Grand Hustle rapstress Iggy Azalea has been known to document her life on social media networks, which her fans love, but it seems one photo wasn’t meant to get out.

Over the weekend Iggy was getting ready to perform at the Roxy in L.A. when she uploaded a photo of her ample assets to Instagram, but she quickly took the photo down. However, the photo has quickly been circulating around the web.

After taking down the photo Iggy tweeted, “the camera captures everything BUT the moment.”

Nicki Minaj in Twitter Drama… Again

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj has caused drama in the Twitter world yet again, but this time it’s down to her lack of tweeting. The Harajuku Barbie is well known for her outlandish tweets and has had beef online with stars ranging from Lil Kim to Cher. But last month she quit Twitter when a fan allegedly posted leaked music samples on the social networking site. In true Minaj fashion, she refused to leave quietly by posting several tweets such as “Posted leaked music! *deletin twttr*” and “Like seriously, it’s (sic) but so much a person can take. Good ****ing bye,” before actually deactivating the account.

According to Starpulse, the Super Bass singer felt guilty for upsetting her 11 million followers by closing down her account but admitted she was enjoying time away from social networking. When probed about the possibility of rejoining the Tweeting world, she said “Reinstate my account? I don’t know yet. I have to say, I’ve been kind of enjoying life without Twitter. But I feel bad on the Barbz (fans). They got really sad when I deleted it.” She also added that although she received a lot of abuse online, she missed the support of her fans.

Therefore, unsurprisingly perhaps, a staggering 8 full days after deactivating the account, Minaj rejoined Twitter again after telling UK chat show host Graham Norton that she hoped her followers would wait for her. Her dramatic exit and fickle return has fuelled rumours that the whole thing was a free publicity stunt orchestrated because of low album sales. It is well known that Twitter gives members a 30 day cooling off period before locking the account permanently, so Nicki’s rapid return has backed up these claims.

Another theory came from the New York Daily News who suggested that the real motive behind the closure of Nicki’s account was the backlash and abuse she was receiving after speaking out about her father in an interview on news show Nightline. Speaking to ABC’s Juju Chang, she revealed that as a child she had desires to kill her abusive father Omar Miraj. However, Nicki denied that this was the reason she went off the Twitter radar and once again took to site to slam the paper, tweeting “Ha! The Daily News said I deleted my twitter after being criticized 4 saying I want2 kill my father (sic)!? How can u just print lies d**k heads?!!”

It seems that life without Twitter could be the simplest way to maintain a drama-free existence. Earlier this week, there were reports that ex Spice Girl, Mel B and her sister had a bizarre argument regarding transferral of finances within their family over Twitter. Apparently not only did Danielle Brown air the dirty family laundry online, she also questioned her sister’s mental health and the well being of her children.

Similarly, Lil Wayne’s rumoured fiancé, Dhea, may wish she’d steered clear of Twitter as sources alleged that Weezy broke up with her after she created her own account. Apparently he prefers the more low key women and felt she was trying to capitalize from his name.

Even hip-hop veterans such as Jay-Z and Eminem have had their fair share of drama in the Twitter world. Jay-Z fell out with Dre and blasted his own record label online back in 2011, and Eminem’s management have recently refuted a hoax account set up in the name of the rap star’s daughter Hailie Jade.

So with all the trouble it creates, it seems that Nicki Minaj maybe had the right idea when she closed her account down. But with celebrities continuing to fall out with each other and air their personal lives online for the world to see, Twitter is probably one of the best sources to find out the latest celebrity news straight from the horse’s mouth.

Introducing: Willis Earl Beal

Widely tipped as one of the next big things in music, Chicago’s Willis Earl Beal is made of strong, strong stuff and has a sound to match. His first album “Acousmatic Blues” came out on 2nd April and is probably one of the most unusual debuts for many years. The guy has, in the past, had a fairly rough time of things – most of the songs for this album were put down while Earl Beal was homeless in and around Chicago. At one point he was posting handmade flyers promoting his work to as many people as possible, hoping he’d get some sort of reply or some luck. He didn’t even have enough money to eat properly, let alone do the most basic of things like run a car and he definitely wasn’t polishing a vintage car and looking for classic car insurance. Well, in the end he did get lucky. Amazingly, he got a reply from Mos Def, who’s been championing and supporting him since hearing one of his demos. He was impressed enough to not only want to help but to also offer to put together and produce a film of Earl Beal’s life which is gonna make for a fascinating watch. To put it bluntly though now, the boy finally done good.

What does he sound like?

Most of his songs come from the soul, from the heart, sort of like a 21st century Otis Redding. He’s got a very bluesy, funky vibe going on and his recordings and songs are more or less pared down to as basic a set up as possible. Very little in the way of any backing, if there is it’s very simple – he basically wants to let his voice do the talking (or singing, or whatever). What he does is sort of like a cross between rapping and singing; lyrically he’s from the school of hard knocks, the kind of “don’t take any shit” stuff that can only come from heartbreak and a broken soul. From his song “Evening’s Kiss”:

“Clip-clop, concrete heels on it. I’m still disillusioned and cool catatonic. Always in a daze without smoking that chronic. And the door’s still open at the end of the day. And I’m still hoping without much to say. Ask me how I’m feeling; well I’m full of shit ‘n doubt. Ask me who I’m with and I’ll tell you I’m without…”

Wavering Lines is just mind blowing, the video clip below is the screen test for the song. He introduces himself and then just breaks into this torrent of unaccompanied soul. He’s just got the kind of voice that’s so real, so full of life and so full of experience, despite him still being only twenty seven years old. His vocal performances can really only get stronger as he develops his style and gets more songs under his belt.

He’s got it all: a croaky rasp, a hollering roar, a falsetto soar.

Perhaps the only downside to Beal’s music that needs improving on is the sometimes not always perfect backing. There’s downplaying it and taking it back to basics, which is all well and good if it’s done properly – however, there’s just this feeling that sometimes it’s almost as if he’s not even trying. It could work if it had just a bit more effort put into that part of his work rather than just solely concentrating on his vocal performance. If he could master that he’d be elevated simply from another good vocalist to someone extraordinary who’ll be talked about for years and years to come. That said, if it’s purely a great vocal you want, he’s got it. He’s got it in heaps and tons.

On Tour:

You wanna go see him live, right? You can. He’s playing dates in the following places during May. 2nd May at The Echo, Los Angeles with Emily Kokal, 3rd May Cafe du Nord, San Francisco 4th May Barboza, Seattle 5th May Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver and 6th May Holocene, Portland. He’s back in Chicago between the 13th and 15th July for dates at the Pitchfork Music Festival. You can find all the details about his gigs here: willisearlbeal.com. In between he’s playing throughout Europe and also the UK. Go go go. Willis Earl Beal. You heard him here first.

Beastie Boys Sued Over Tracks On “Licensed To Ill,” “Paul’s Boutique”

The Beastie Boys have been hit with lawsuit over four tracks, two on their landmark debut album Licensed To Ill and two from their follow-up, Paul’s Boutique.

HipHop/R&B label Tuf America filed the lawsuit against all members of the Beastie Boys on May 3, just one day before member Adam “MCA” Yauch died from cancer on May 4.

Tuf America filed the lawsuit in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The lawsuit claims that the Beastie’s illegally sampled Trouble Funk’s songs “Say What” and “Drop The Bomb.”

The group is accused of using portions of Trouble Funk’s 1982 song “Drop The Bomb” onLicensed To Ill and Paul’s Boutique.

Tuf America claims the group used portions of the song on their classic 1986 song “Hold It Now Hit It,” as well as “The New Style,”  both on Licensed To Ill.

Tuf America claims The Beastie Boys used the drums on “Drop The Bomb” on their song “Car Thief” on Paul’s Boutique.

Tuf America also claims The Beastie Boys illegally sampled Trouble Funk’s 1982 song “Say What,” for their song “Shadrach,” also on Paul’s Boutique.

Tuf America said they did a thorough sound analysis of the tracks in question and concluded that the Beastie Boys illegally incorporated elements of the songs without permission.

To complicate the matter, Tuf America claims The Beasties and Capitol Records continue to profit off the album, by way of anniversary and commemorative releases ofLicensed To Ill and Paul’s Boutique, which was released in 1989.

Tuf America is seeking a trial to determine the amount of punitive and exemplary damages, if any. Source: Allhiphop.com

T.I. Calls Azealia Banks & Iggy Azalea Beef “Bitch Shit”

T.I. says he’s staying out of the beef between Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks.

T.I. stopped by WGCI’s The Morning Riot today to discuss a slew of topics, from his upcoming album Trouble Man to sticking to his trap roots. But during the interview, he addressed the beef between his Grand Hustle signee Iggy Azalea and Harlem, New York rapstress Azealia Banks, who fired shots at Tip on Twitter.

“I ain’t even know nothin’ about it. I didn’t even see it. I know they going through their thing, but the fact that she’s speaking upon me and mine, that is what I consider bitch shit. I’m a man. You ain’t got no business addressing me,” he said. “You and me, keep dealing with that woman. Y’all handle that. You and me, we ain’t got nowhere to go with that.”
